Introduction to Botox

Botox was discovered in 1987, and approved to be used therapeutically in 1989 for the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm in patients over 12 years old.

In 2002 Botox was FDA approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Subsequently, cosmetic use of botulinum toxin type A has become widespread.

Botox is modeled from a neurotoxin which is extracted from Clostridium Botulinum bacterium called botulinum toxin. Botox works by temporarily preventing nerve signals from reaching the muscles – relaxing them and preventing their ability to contract, resulting in a smoothing appearance of the skin.

The wrinkles caused by movement are called Dynamic Wrinkles. Examples of dynamic wrinkles are crows feet around your eyes caused by smiling and squinting, and the lines between your eyebrows caused by frowning and scowling. Botox is a safe and effective treatment that causes softening of dynamic wrinkles, resulting in a younger, more rested appearance. Ultimately Botox treatments can promote confidence in yourself.

Botox is a naturally occurring substance and injections are minimally invasive and when performed by a trained doctor in a medical setting, the results can be dramatic.
