The erbium laser is primarily attracted to the water in skin. This causes a controlled ablation of a very fine layer of skin. This laser is used to resurface the skin, to treat pigmentation problems and sun damage. By removing the superficial layers of skin, new collagen and skin are regenerated, and the skin returns with a more even texture. Recovery time is generally 3-5 days.
Cost - $1000 and up per treatment
The erbium laser has a wavelength of 2940nm which is primarily attracted to the water in skin, which causes a controlled ablation of a very fine layer of skin. Tattoos or permanent makeup will not be affected by this laser.
The erbium laser is used for people who have sun damage and/or pigmentation problems. Fair skin types are the best candidates; however darker skin types can be treated. Patients who have been treated with Accutane or Clarus must wait 6 months before getting this treatment .
The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes per area. The sensation is like a small rubber band snapping on the skin. A cooling system is used, and cold air is blown on the area being treated to help minimize any discomfort. Immediately after treatment, most patients experience heat such as you would have with sunburn. You will look and feel like you have a sunburn. Your face will be cleansed after treatment and a cooling cream will be applied. You will be given cream to take home for your use.
Infection with the herpes (the cold sore virus) virus is possible and therefore prophylactic medication for this condition will be prescribed.
Over the next few days, you skin will undergo an intense peel. This is simply a waiting process. You must not pick at the peeling skin. Cream should be applied continuously, and once the face is comfortable to touch, you should cleanse your skin frequently. This cleanser is also sent home with you. If there is any discomfort, you may take Advil or Tylenol.
Once the skin has peeled you will see fresher, more even toned skin. This will increase with each future treatment. You may see anywhere from a 40-80% reduction in sun damage after the final treatment. It is very important at this time to wear a sunscreen to protect this new, fresher skin.
The actual procedure is minimally uncomfortable. The air cooling system used almost reduces the discomfort to nothing. Immediately after the treatment, the heat sensation can be uncomfortable and generally lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to the next day. This is similar to the heat you feel when you have had a sunburn. You may take pain medication if you require it, but this is generally not required.
You will continue to age, and therefore many clients like to return yearly for a single touch up treatment.
You may return to all of your regular activities immediately. However, the peeling is intense, and most people would not be comfortable with others seeing them during this peeling process which lasts anywhere from 2-4 days on average. Remember, this intense peel is what you want. It is very important to wear sunscreen after treatment as the new skin will be very sensitive to the sun.
There is a small risk of skin pigment changes, cold sore eruptions and scarring after erbium laser treatments.
